Fort Smith National Cemetery

Fort Smith National Cemetery

Fort Smith, Arkansas

This national cemetery started out as a burial ground for the Fort Smith military reservation. In 1867 it was elevated to a national cemetery. In 1871, after the closing of the military reservation, President Grant ordered that the cemetery be reactivated and remain open for the purpose of future military burials.

Over the years, the cemetery has been expanded several times and now totals 32-acres. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 29, 1999.

The cemetery has space available for casketed and cremated remains. It is opened to visitors every day from 7:30 a.m. to sunset.
